G.O.A.L.S. - Giving Orphaned Africans Love with Soccer
Inspired by similar ideas and a firsthand visit with orphans in Nigeria, G.O.A.L.S. was created with the focus of providing much needed soccer uniforms and equipment for children in Africa.
The premise of the program is fairly simple: U.S. kids, mainly in the 5-15 year old range, have accumulated countless soccer jerseys and other gear over the years. In many cases, these items are in the backs of closets and at the bottom of dresser drawers. The main initiative of G.O.A.L.S. is to collect new or used jerseys, shoes and other soccer gear that will be shipped to African countries (primarily sub-Saharan countries with high rates of HIV/AIDS orphans).
Secondarily, G.O.A.L.S. is considering fundraising towards building 3-on-3 soccer courts in these countries. These courts, called futsal, are popular in Europe and will provide a safe gathering place for kids in these countries with the hopeful outcome of breaking down tribal differences (which even exist in metropolitan areas).
The first recipients of the collected items will be orphans in Lagos, Nigeria. We have additionally reached out to other contacts in several countries to coordinate distribution. Unfortunately, we will not have a shortage of recipients.
